TRENDS: Drawcard Props

Props are becoming more and more sought after in everything from visitor attractions, to galleries and restaurants. Social media friendly and a reason to visit in themselves, they can also lend iconic value to the venue.

One of our favourite props is found in the Brasserie of Light restaurant inside the Selfridges building on Oxford Street in London. Created by Damien Hirst, a 24ft crystal encrusted statue of the mythical Pegasus, complete with a 30ft wingspan, soars over the restaurant’s diners magnificently. We would expect nothing less from daring London restauranteurs Caprice Holdings, whom we worked with on the Sexy Fish restaurant and which also featured iconic artwork by Damien Hirst and others.

Props are an area that traditional Quantity Surveyors would usually shy away from, however Greenway Associates are no stranger to the weird and wonderful! We have set about appreciating and understanding the individual components that go into creating such props.

Recently, in our experience working on the Crystal Maze Live Experience project, we had the pleasure of working alongside an extremely creative and talented company, MDM Props. They were commissioned to create a large variety of interactive props that would feature within the pre-designed sets of this live experience visitor attraction. These included aztec temples and a crystal dome.

We’re keeping an eye on this trend, and hoping that more clients choose to incorporate unique and design led props into their projects! If you’ve got a project coming up with props on the agenda, and need an objective opinion, feel free to get in contact.
