The delivery of balanced, sustainable urban living is one of the most pressing issues facing the world. Siemens has created a landmark building, known as The Crystal, to showcase technologies which support the drive for sustainable, urban infrastructure solutions. The striking building was commissioned by Siemens and designed by WilkinsonEyre as both an exhibition centre and think tank, exemplifying sustainable design. It sits within East London's Green Enterprise District, which is an area of regeneration in the Royal Docks and is adjacent to WilkinsonEyre's Emirates Air Line cable car terminal at Royal Victoria Dock.

OUR ROLE

Greenway Associates were appointed to provide cost management and contract services. This included cost planning, procurement of various packages and final account agreement.

THE PROJECT

This unique exhibition dedicated to urban sustainability showcases global trends and challenges visitors to reinvent the way they think about cities now and for future generations. It’s about creating an awareness of how and where, as individuals, we can make a positive difference to our common future.

The exhibition is divided into 10 different zones and covers a wide variety of subjects that affect urban sustainability including planning, buildings, safety, security, environment, water, transport and health.

In a building with the highest sustainability credentials, the spaces are flooded with natural light and Event Communications design took advantage of the mezzanine floor as a natural starting point to the exhibition. Lightweight structures provide intimate enclosures for immersive experiences and contrast with open areas which use the full height for collective audience involvement. Screen-based interactivity reflects Siemens’ technological focus, and the exhibition also includes a wide variety of display techniques, such as art installations, manual interactives, audio and light shows, film presentations and graphics.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS

The Crystal is the world’s only building to receive the top rating in both the BREEAM and LEED certification systems. The Crystal attracts around 100,000 visitors annually and is the base for over 200 Siemens staff.
