The Olympic Museum

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND
COMPLETED 2013

The Olympic Museum was originally opened in 1993 in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2011, Greenway Associates supported its 23 month long renovation to provide the museum with three new permanent galleries, that featured stunning displays, audio-visual interpretation, and engaging activities. The aim was to attract a new generation of visitors and to express the ideals and brand of the Olympic movement.

OUR ROLE

Greenway Associates were appointed as Exhibition Cost Consultants, over a five year period, to provide early feasibility cost advice, cost planning through the early design development stages, tendering and procurement (including contract agreement), post-contract cost control, reporting and final account agreements. Jamie Kessack was the lead for this project.

THE PROJECT

The Museum has over 3000 m2 of exhibition space, over 1500 exhibits and 150 screens. The Museum’s collections abound in film, audio and photography, with films being displayed on screen, projected, as well as interactive films that can be manipulated by hands and wands etc. The three floors of permanent exhibition space examine the Olympic World, Olympic Games and the Olympic Spirit using new displays, interactive exhibits, unique collections items and engaging audio-visual displays. Visitors can move from Ancient Greece to the founding father of the Olympic Movement Pierre de Coubertin to the hosting of the Olympic Games themselves, and can end their tour at the TOM Shop and TOM Café.

The Olympic Park was also redesigned to feature sports installations and sculptures, as well as a ceremonial stair that takes visitors from the lakeside to the Museum’s front door.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS

The Olympic Museum re-opened to the public on 21 December 2013 after 23 months of renovation. It welcomed 50,000 visitors in the first month alone and continues to attract many more.
