Epic Ireland

NEW VISITOR ATTRACTION, DUBLIN
COMPLETED 2016

EPIC Ireland is the newest addition to the Custom House Quay (CHQ) building in Dublin’s Dockyards. It brings together the history of the Irish people whilst also looking at what the future holds for the nation. It focuses in on Irish migration, motivation and influence across the globe. Set in the brick vaults of CHQ building, it has swiftly become Dublin’s biggest new tourist attraction since the Guinness Storehouse.

OUR ROLE

Greenway Associates were commissioned by Event Communications, and we worked alongside them to assist in the cost planning and procurement stages. Jared Mensah was our project leader on this exhibition.

THE PROJECT

EPIC Ireland is a state-of-the-art interactive experience. This comprehensive account of the Irish Diaspora is told by showcasing the ten million journeys and routes of over seventy million people around the world.

The exhibition has 21 interactive galleries that offer a high-tech emotional experience. Each gallery has been designed with a different layout, with screens on the walls and floors and in audiovisual pods where visitors can swipe, click and touch to access information.

Its growing collection will be stored in the cloud rather than on shelves or behind glass. As part of the “Diaspora Today” section, blogs, tweets, social-media posts and emails are collected from Irish people living across the globe.

PROJECT CHALLENGES & ACHIEVEMENTS

EPIC Ireland is the first digital-only museum in the world. This presented many procurement challenges. The project team was tasked with ensuring that the different physical and digital interactive elements were delivered without any gaps in contractor responsibilities, while at the same time allowing for flexibility and creativity. An appropriate procurement strategy was researched and implemented to enhance coordination between multiple interrelated packages. The forms of contract were carefully selected and executed to fulfil this task.

EPIC Ireland opened on May 6, 2016 in the presence of Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, and to widespread critical acclaim. EPIC Ireland is receiving upwards of 120,000 visitors a year.
